The three stages
Every stage is for a grown-up and a child together. Ages are a guide; the placement visit decides where to start.
- 01
Babies
Yellow dot, 3 to 18 monthsSkillsBeing held close in the water, face to face with you
Songs and gentle movement through the water
Splashing with hands and kicking with legs
Floating on the back with your hands for support
Moving upWhen your baby is pulling up or walking and your family wants more room to move, the instructor suggests Toddlers.
- 02
Toddlers
Green dot, 18 months to 3 yearsSkillsBlowing bubbles and getting faces wet, one step at a time
Kicking on the front, holding a noodle with you close
Climbing the steps and reaching for the wall
Games and songs that name each step: kick, bubble, reach
Moving upWhen bubbles, kicking and the steps feel familiar and your child follows the instructor's cues, the instructor suggests Preschoolers.
- 03
Preschoolers
Blue dot, 3 to 5 yearsSkillsFloating on the front and back with support
Kicking with a kickboard
Walking along the wall and reaching for it
Taking turns and listening for the instructor's signal
Moving upThere is no stage after this one. When your child is ready for lessons without an adult in the water, we help you think about what to look for.
Sample levels.
Every child moves at their own pace.
Before class
What to bring
Everything comes from home. We ask for nothing else.
Towels
One for you and one for your child. A hooded towel is nice for the walk to the locker room.
A swim diaper
Children under 3 wear a snug swim diaper under a swimsuit or swim shirt.
A swim shirt
Swim shirts are welcome in every class, for the adult and the child.
Warm clothes
A change of clothes and a warm layer for after class.
Moving up
The instructor suggests the next stage
A child moves up when the instructor sees the skills of a stage feel familiar, never on a date. The instructor tells you why, and you decide with us when to switch classes.
If you are unsure, ask at any class. Moving up mid-session moves your place with you.

Not sure where to start?
A placement visit is a short time in the pool with an instructor.
